Minchin place names
As part of the series on the Minchin name, I am collating place names containing "minchin", and trying to determine their origins.
- Towns
- Minchinbury, New South Wales, known throughout Australia for its champagne.
William Minchin was the Principal Superintendent of Police and Treasurer of the Police Fund in the colony. He was granted 1,000 acres of land in the area named after him and now known as Minchinbury.
- Minchinhampton, England. This is Stroud gives the origin:
The name actually takes its meaning from an old word for "nuns" - William the Conqueror originally gave the town to the Abbaye aux Dames of Caen.
- Minchinton, England
- Minchinabad, Pakistan
- Minchinbury, New South Wales, known throughout Australia for its champagne.
- Roads
- Minchin Way, Margaret River, Western Australia
- Natural features
- Lake Minchin, Chile - perhaps related to British geographer JB Minchin who surveyed Bolivia, and presented a paper to the Royal Geographical Society in 1881.
- Lake Minchin, New Zealand
- Minchin Hole Cave, Wales
- Mount Minchin, Western Australia

Ever since I retired 3years ago I have been putting together a large piece of research: The Book of Minchin: A Family for All Seasons. I am within about 6 weeks of finshing the task, but am still incorporating late comers. Would you like to make a contribution? It's good to have some younger Minchins included. My G-G-Grandfather was James Minchin, Pioneer to Swan River W.A. Look forward to hearing from you.

Dorothy, are you the daughter of Gerald H. Minchin (1901-1969)?
