You're not from around here...

The 2009 Transatlantic Trends immigration survey indicates that Britons have a less liberal attitude towards immigrants and immigration than other European states. This is exemplified by the fact that they believe that over a quarter of Britons are immigrants whereas the actual figure is around one in ten.



In fact, the proportion of immigrants was overestimated by all countries surveyed.



There's lots of other interesting data about perceptions of immigrants and their handling by governments in the full report (e.g. 54% of Dutch respondents think that legal immigrants increase crime in society) . Australia wasn't surveyed, but the 2007 data from the ABS indicates that 25% of the population were born overseas.
