The Fuji Xerox Phaser 3125N is a networked monochrome laser printer. If you have trouble setting it up using a Windows 7 PC then read on for my discoveries.
The printer, as with most network devices these days, ships with DHCP turned on, but that didn't work in my case. My Billion router said it was handing out one IP address, but the printer status page showed it was using a completely different address (and subnet mask and gateway). This meant that the printer was not visible on the network. At this stage I wanted to change the printer from using DHCP to a static IP. Due to its low-cost, the printer doesn't have buttons and an LCD screen to adjust its settings. Instead it has a built-in webserver, which would work fine if the printer was on the network. You can probably see a problem here.
If you are running Windows 7, and have used the official Fuji Xerox Windows 7 installation software, then this is as far as you will ever get. However if, in your desperation, you reach for the Windows XP installation software then you will find that it comes with an additional program called SetIP. This can be installed as as stand-alone program within Windows 7, and it works just fine. Using this you can connect to the printer using its MAC address and set its static IP. The Vista installation software has the SetIP functionality integrated into the install program so you can't easily install it separately.
I assume that eventually Fuji Xerox will notice that they've forgotten this crucial component of their software in Windows 7 and will release an updated package. Until then, just use the XP software. Luckily this troublesome setup only needs to be done once. After that it's clear sailing.
P.S. Mini-review: Phaser 3125N has bland design and is a trifle noisy, but has low running costs and excellent print quality.
