The world goes 3D

In 2010 a majority of the highest grossing films seen in cinemas worldwide were in 3D. Whilst higher ticket prices for 3D movies means we aren't actually comparing audience figures, for studios it's revenue that matters, and based on this we're going to be seeing a whole lot more 3D movies in 2011.

If you have a pair of 3D cinema glasses handy, then try this party trick. Put them on, then stand in front of a mirror and look at your eyes. Predict what will happen if you shut one eye, then see if that prediction is accurate. Even if you know how the 3D glasses work I expect you'll get this prediction wrong. (There's a long, technical answer from Yahoo Answers, and a more understandable, short answer at Physics Forums.)
