Google Maps shows Perth in 3D

Perth has finally gone three dimensional in Google Maps. Until now, the view Google showed us was this rather unrealistic flat image, which only looked good from directly overhead.

Now we see the buildings, trees and other non-trivial structures with volume, which makes a world of difference. The images are a bit rough and chunky at the moment, but it's a great start. To navigate around this in the "preview" version of Google Maps hold down control while you move your mouse to steer the camera.

This new view is also available in Google Earth, if you turn on 3D Buildings.

Elsewhere in Australia, Adelaide appears to be the only other capital city displayed by Google in the glamorous third dimension, though Melbourne and Sydney can be viewed in 3D via Nokia's Here maps.

A list of cities available in auto-generated 3D is on Wikipedia.
