Mysterious UK driving etiquette

If you come to a road wide enough for only a single car, and there is an oncoming car, then flashing your headlights means either:
  1. Wait, I'm coming through, or
  2. You go first, I'll wait
If you enter a road in front of another car, then putting on your hazard lights means either:
  1. There is danger ahead, or
  2. Thanks for letting me in
In both cases #1 is what the Highway Code says the signal should be used for, and #2 is what it is usually used for. For people new to driving in the UK this may cause some interesting situations.

Finally, the most widely flouted Highway Code law I've noticed is regarding right of way for turning cars. From the code:
watch out for pedestrians crossing a road into which you are turning. If they have started to cross they have priority, so give way
It's a brave person indeed who'll cross in front of a fast-moving turning vehicle expecting to be given right of way. I reckon many drivers know the rule, but cautious pedestrians wait because they don't know if the driver will give way, and so if the driver stops too they reach an awkward stalemate.
