Bumper cars in New York

In Australia I would expect my car to survive a lifetime without coming into contact with any other vehicle. In New York, however, bumper nudging appears to be a common occurrence. So what does one do to ensure that their pristine new car is unsullied by less-careful drivers?

You whack a huge chunk of ugly black rubber onto the car's rear! Bumper guards are now a thing!

When not required they flip away into the boot, so they're not as much an affront to style as they initially seem. Still, I prefer living in a city where such accessories are not a necessity.
